Our Story

Welcome to Poppy Joe’s Pastures! We’re Doug and Sarah, and our journey began on Zoom calls and corporate spreadsheets, eventually leading us west of Atlanta in search of land. Before we knew it, we were knee-deep in homesteading books, signing up for local classes, and racking up serious screen time watching all the tutorials on living a self-sufficient life. We’ve traded some city conveniences for a life closer to the soil, dreaming of fresh veggies, happy animals, and growing closer to God through tending to His creation.

Don’t get us wrong — we still clock in at our day jobs and have no shame in hitting Chick-fil-A for lunch! But we’re learning to raise our food, craft what we need from scratch, and rediscover old-school skills that just feel right. With two dogs at our heels (and hopefully more critters soon), we’re building something honest, heartfelt, and a little scrappy: a simple life guided by faith, hard work, and a respect for the earth.

Meet Sarah

Hi, I’m Sarah! By day, I work in cybersecurity—lots of screens, code, and deadlines. But off the clock, you’ll find me baking fresh sourdough, flipping through gardening books, and sneaking out to the land to plant something new. I’m into getting my hands dirty in the soil, turning old thrift finds into farmhouse treasures, and keeping the dogs happy (trust me, they’re convinced they run this place). I’m always on the hunt for new skills—whether it’s preserving our harvests, whipping up natural home products, or experimenting with rustic DIY projects.

Family and faith keep me grounded, reminding me to slow down and appreciate the small joys in each season. If I can be outside instead of inside, I’m there—feeling the sun, getting dirt under my nails, and soaking up the lessons nature has to offer. It’s a journey fueled by curiosity, creativity, and the simple satisfaction of watching things grow.

Meet Doug

By day, Doug navigates the world of government contracting for IT—plenty of problem-solving, proposals, and digital details. But once he steps off the clock, you’ll find him outside, putting plans into action with a can-do attitude and a steady hand. He’s the builder, landscaper, and tractor wrangler—always ready to tackle whatever project comes next. From woodworking to hauling equipment, Doug is the one who turns our homestead daydreams into something real.

Like me, he’s grounded by family, faith, and a deep respect for the land beneath our feet. He might not say much about it, but every fence post he sets, every tool he sharpens, and every structure he builds is part of a bigger vision—one that’s equal parts old-fashioned grit, practical know-how, and the simple joy of making things work. It’s not always glamorous, but he’s all in, every step of the way.
