WHY I STARTED MY BLOG
Why I Started This Blog (And Why You Should Start Yours, Too)
Ah, the obligatory blog post where I tell you why I created this silly little website. Some reasons are obvious—like the fact that I’ve always loved writing and the passion I feel when sharing what I’ve learned (and am still learning) in this wild journey called life.
But beyond being a creative outlet for me to connect with myself and this community, I knew this blog was an opportunity to create the kind of content I wished I had when I was preparing for this farming life.
Seriously—I wanted simple, concrete “How-To” guides on all the things I was dreaming of. And yes, there’s a ton of information out there, and so much of it helped me! But I’m a first-timer at everything… gardening, chickens, goats, cows, canning, running a business—you name it. I wanted to read from the perspective of someone just like me. Someone who bought the land, had the big dreams, but no real experience on how to make it all happen.
So, I knew it was my duty to share as I learned. To share the failures that led to the successes. To share everything I wish I knew before I started, everything I now know, and everything I’m still figuring out. I want my readers to see exactly what I researched, the materials I gathered, and the exact steps I took to bring my ideas to life.
Finding My Niche (Or Not)
It’s funny because when I first started researching how to run a blog, every blogger said the same thing: Find your niche.
I knew homesteading and farming would be a huge part of my writing, but I couldn’t box myself into just that. What about everything I’ve learned from Billie that I wish I had known before adopting her? Or the habits I’ve implemented that led me to this lifestyle in the first place? Those are some of my favorite topics to talk about! Then there are the recipes, the home décor, the DIY projects… I just had too much I wanted to share.
So, I decided I wouldn’t force myself into a niche—I’d just write whatever I feel like writing.
The Goal Was Never Just Money
From the beginning, my goal wasn’t to make money. My goal was to connect with like-minded people and provide the information I had desperately Googled before I got here.
That said, as I’ve poured my time and energy into this blog and learned more about running a website, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t thinking about financial success now. But here’s the thing—I know that’s always the final piece. Monetizing this blog will only come after the hard work of researching, reading, writing, and creating value for my audience.
Your ‘Why’ is Everything
So, here’s my biggest piece of advice: Your ‘WHY’ should be the foundation of everything you do when building a blog or website.
Why did you start this journey in the first place?
Why do you want to share your knowledge with others?
How do you want to serve your readers and make them feel?
When you work from your why, the content flows naturally. You’re not obsessing over page views or stressing about how much you’re earning from an affiliate link—you’re focused on authentically providing value and inspiring others to take action.
And you know the best part? When you move from your heart and connect with your purpose, the money follows.
